Many studies have recently been finding how massage helps relieve pain and assist the body's natural healing mechanisms.
Scientific research is proving the effectiveness of massage and finding that massage actually changes the body chemistry to help relieve physical and emotional pain and help the body heal itself. Here are just a few of the ailments that massage is being proven to help:
Osteoarthritis--In 2006 a study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. In this study, patients given full-body Swedish massage showed great improvement in their symptoms of osteoarthritis in the knee. The patients had massage two times a week for four weeks, and then once a week for 4 weeks. The patients who received massage had less pain and greater range of motion than those who didn't receive massage..
Back Pain--A lot of us know from personal experience that massage is irreplaceable as an aid in overcoming back pain. At the Group Health Center for Health Studies, they found that massage is more effective than chiropractic and acupuncture in treating low back pain.
Fibromyalgia--some research has shown short term relief of symptoms for those who suffer from fibromyalgia.
PMS--A study of 24 women who suffered from severe PMS had reduced symptoms of pain, water retention and mood swings
